HOLIDAY READ | Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham

Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham

Warning: Never read this book on a plane, on the Metro… or wherever someone can look over your shoulder.

Not only do most chapter titles say or reference sex and drugs, there are many (very well drawn) images throughout the book related to those topics as well. One thing’s for sure, Not That Kind of Girl: A young woman tells you what she’s “learned” by Lena Dunham has a shock factor!

Lena Dunham bookI watch Girls, and although I can relate to a few things that happen on the show (like bad hair days or a breakup), I don’t come CLOSE to relating to most other things (drugs, nudity, etc.). But, that is why I love the show! It makes you a bit uncomfortable, but in an entertaining way every week. It has wit and smart humor, mixed in with some disgust and grossness. But since it’s a TV show, things can easily be exaggerated, so if you are too freaked out you can just tell yourself that it’s all make believe.

For Lena’s book, I was hoping it would be similar to this (maybe less aggressive, out of control, and repulsive since technically it was all true stories). Well…. sadly her life is just as shockingly crude, in your face, and inappropriate as her TV show.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy I read the book, but I didn’t necessarily enjoy it. It’s crazy to read other peoples lives who are so different from yours and think, “wow… that is actually how some people think and live”.

If you are looking for a fast read, and aren’t bothered by uncomfortable situations and (sometimes) very disturbing stories, then give it try. If you are offended or flustered easily….stay far far away from it!

What are your thoughts on this book and the controversy surrounding it?
