TIPS & TRICKS | How to make flowers last longer

make flowers last longer

Nothing makes me happier than a beautiful bouquet of flowers (hint hint… it’s almost Valentine’s Day!). But nothing makes me more sad than when they die quickly. Yes, half of the battle is picking the right kind of flowers at the right moment, but the other half is tending to them once you have plopped them in a vase at home.

Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way to keep my bouquet looking fresh and chipper for a few days longer.

Remove excess leaves
Make sure to remove any excess leaves that will be submerged in the water. After a few days of leaves sitting in water, they begin to decompose, dirtying your water and killing the flowers quicker.

Vodka
Add a splash of vodka to the water to minimize bacteria growth in the water.

Sugar
Add a teaspoon or two of sugar into the flower water. The sugar makes the blossoms last longer.

Penny
Add a penny to the water. The copper is an acidifier, which will prevent bacteria growth.

Cut flowers at an angle
Cut stems at an angle to give the flower extra surface area to absolve water. Re-trim the flowers after three or four days.

Change water
No matter what tricks you have, the best way to keep your flowers fresh is to change the water daily!
