BOOK CLUB | The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain

The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain

If you liked Gone Girl, then read this! The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain was one of the best books I’ve read in a long while.

The main character, Riley MacPherson, grows up her whole life thinking her sister, Lisa, killed herself at age 17. Fast forward 20 years, and now both of Riley’s parents are dead. All she has left is her emotionally unstable brother, Danny, and the task of cleaning out her childhood home. That’s when evidence begin to surface that Lisa may still be alive. All of the secret lives and lies begin to be revealed and the plot twists and twists!

Besides the mystery intertwined in this book making it so amazing, the main characters (both Lisa and Riley) are also so relatable. I have never been in a situation like either of them have (obviously), but their need to push through it and survive is exactly what I would try to do. I found myself rooting for the women in the book, whether in a right or wrong situation, because that’s what I would want someone to do for me.

This book got me thinking… what would I do in a situation like Lisa’s or Riley’s… or even Danny’s for that matter? Would I run? Would I try and find out the truth? Would I hide from everyone, even family? Would I face the court? Would I make the decisions Riley did? Or would I take Danny’s side? (this book sparks a lot of internal debate, clearly)

Once I finished to book, I researched Diane Chamberlain. She has written so many books! I have officially added The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes to my reading list! (Anyone know if this is actually the best next book to ready by her?)

P.S. If you are reading this book for your book club, or just like good discussion questions, here are the author’s discussion starters. I personally find number 5 and 10 great talking points! Especially because I don’t agree with what Riley did when it relates to #10… What are your thoughts?
