I just got back from an amazing trip to the boyfriend’s family’s lake house. We lucked out with beautiful weather all weekend long and even though it took 6 hours to get there and 5 to get back home (ughs) it was completely worth it!
Some of the best things about vacation is that you can escape from the real world for a few days, ignore work emails, and enjoy your time with others. Some of the worst things is that your eating, sleeping, and workout schedule get a bit thrown off.
Here are four tips that I use to stay fit, be healthy, and not completely undo what I work for every week at the gym during a vacation:
1. Eat smart
Binge eating cookies and pizza all weekend long (guilty, sadly) can lead to many things, like an upset tummy. Make sure to eat healthy, balanced meals like you would at home. Try and have your meals at reasonable hours so your body can stay on a schedule it’s used to. And don’t forget to mix in some vegetables and fruit!
2. Workout in the morning
Get it done and out of the way! Wake up an hour early and get your workout done before anyone else is awake. That way you don’t miss out on any of the fun. For example: if someone wants to start drinking summer cocktails around 2pm, you can participate because you already worked out that day :) No one wants to decide between a summer cocktail and an afternoon run… we all know which one would win out.
Note my workout clothes I’m wearing while fishing. I had just returned from my run with the boyfriend and as I cooled down I threw a line in! See, no fun was missed out on.
3. Stay hydrated
Those summer cocktails from point 2 are fun, but can lead to a bad headache the next morning. Make sure to constantly sip water and stay hydrated, especially if you are outside more than you’re used to. Alternate a water with each beverage to keep your body happy!
4. Workout with friends and family
Nothing is better (or more motivating) than working out with a buddy! Working out with the people you are on vacation with doesn’t make it feel like a task, it feels more like a fun, bonding activity. The lake house had beautiful trails along the water, so running was really just exploring the island with the boyfriend :) Easiest few miles I’ve run in a while!
Keeping up with your active lifestyle while on vacation isn’t hard and, if done the right way, it won’t interfere with any of the fun…. such as drinking wine while watching the sunset :)
What are your tricks to staying healthy and active when you are on vacation?
Great tips!! It’s always hard to keep in shape while on vacation…. I will be putting there tips to use in a few weeks along with reading the Nightingale :) ( it’s been on the book shelf for a month waiting for a quite sunny beach day)

Taking a little advice from one of my favorite lifestyle bloggers Amanda B. from Anchored To Sunshine and hitting the gym early this morning with the hubby. Got to keep of those extra vacation calories ( aka Hawaiian Pancake breakfast.)
