LEAP SECOND | How will you spend your extra second today?

leap second june 30

I know I mention my love for theSkimm continually (for example here & here), so I will spare you this time… BUT, if you did by chance read theSkimm this morning you would have learned that today we will have a Leap Second!

I’ve never hear of a “Leap Second” before, but I did a bit of research and it’s actually pretty interesting! Leap seconds were created in 1972 as a way to compensate for Earth’s rotation slowing down.

No, don’t worry, the Earth won’t stop spinning any time soon :) but since 1972 there have been 25 Leap Seconds! So if you ask me, today is a pretty special day, right? :)

What will you do with your extra second today?

Here are just a few ideas that come to mind:

  1. Take a bubble bath
  2. Read In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume (I’m currently hooked!)
  3. Call my mama
  4. Go for a run outside
  5. Go to happy hour with my girlfriends
  6. Cuddle with the boyfriend
  7. Relax with a glass of wine on my balcony

Yes yes, I know I can’t accomplish any of these things in just one second, but you get the idea :) Make the most out of every second you have in life by doing something you love.

And tonight when 23h:59m:60s rolls around, enjoy your extra time on this beautiful earth :)

Ha, they were talking about this on the news today! I love your take on the event! Although that bubble bath sounds fantastic, I think I’ll spend it admiring the creativity of the fans at the US womens world cup game – these guys are creative!

Hahaha love it! Fans are sometimes more entertaining than the players :) depending on the sport, of course haha

Hi Amanda, thanks for the like on aloadabobbins :) I asked the children at school what they’d do with the extra second, based on the assumption that we can say 3 words a second. they were so sweet, saying things like ‘care for everyone’ and ‘bless this world’. Then there was one who said he’d set his alarm so he could get up and shout ‘peanut butter jelly time!’ – he was mortified when I told him that was 4 words, haha!

OMG I just laughed so hard when I read this!! Your students sound so sweet and entertaining haha :) Maybe if he said the 4 words really fast it would have worked for him haha

That was actually his final argument after insisting that peanut butter was one word for at least 30 mins! They are a very funny class, I’ll be sad to see them move on in two weeks :(

He will make a great lawyer one day :) I’m sure next year’s children will be just as adorable, and better at word counting haha
