My roommate and I were talking last night, over a glass of wine as we sat on the couch working into the late hours of the night, that sometimes you just can’t do it all.
But if you’re a perfectionist (like we are) it’s very hard to accept that fact!
On weeks where you’re trying your hardest to keep your head above water at work, it’s important to breath and take a step back. Your work issues aren’t life or death (unless you are a nurse or doctor and then ignore everything I’m about to say!).
When the going gets rough, it’s important to remember that you’re only human (I will refrain from belting out the Christina Perri song right now, although it’s amazing!).
When things start to get really stressful in my life (specifically work right now) I tend to be hard on myself. I kick myself for hitting snooze one too many times in the morning, for skipping a workout because I’m exhausted, or for allowing my email inbox to get full.
So today, I’ll remind myself that I’m doing the best that I can. I’m working as hard as I can. And if sometimes I get overwhelmed, I can take a step back and breath. Because if an email goes unanswered for a few hours, it’s not life or death (and most likely the person on the other end of that email will be happy they can have a chance to breath as well).
What’s my plan tonight, you ask? Leaving my laptop at home and going to my friend’s house for game night. There I’ll stuff my face with food, enjoy time away from emails, and have fun socializing about anything besides work! Is it 7:30 yet??
How do you handle weeks that have a mission of taking you down?
I turn off all the notifications! They stress me out!

I agree:) Going along with that I use the “Do Not Disturb” feature on my phone and give myself a much needed couch potato (or bed veggie) time;)

well, i’m glad you have “game night”. THAT was a basic part of our monthly/weekly/periodic survival plan … and “back in the day”, several of us would, one at a time, give a slide-show (remember photographic slides?) for everyone else. lots of wine, of course. thanks for your thoughts and reflections on what (in varying degrees) affects everyone ~

Love it! That sounds like the perfect way to relax a bit during hectic weeks :) The wine always helps too!
