BOOK REVIEW | The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters

The Paying Guests by Sarah WatersWarning, this book review contains spoilers. But don’t worry, since I’m NOT recommending you read it, you may not care anyways :)

Here’s what the summary on Goodreads says:

It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa — a large, silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants — life is about to be transformed as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

LATEST AUDIBLE | All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony DoerrLet me just begin with… this isn’t my usual type of read. I’ve never liked history (in high school or now), so the fact I was convinced by recommendations to read this book has to tell you something. People loved this book, and so did I.

The story is beautifully written, switching back and forth between character’s lives and time periods. Though, even with all of the back and forth, you always know exactly what the author is describing. It’s so well written I would just sit there listening to the Audible with my eyes closed, picturing the scene unfold in front of me.

AUDIBLE LISTEN | What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty is a great holiday read, perfect metro commute book, or just an easy book to keep by your bed and pick up when you have a few spare minutes before falling to sleep at night. Yes, it’s more of a “chick lit” book, but sometimes those are refreshing after reading something heavier (aka Unbroken).

I found this book on a “must read” list, and finally it was one that held true to the list title (unlike this one…). This book is an easy read with hysterical rants. I actually felt I came away with a new outlook on life (a small change, but still).

LATEST AUDIBLE | The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian by Andy WeirThis is not my usual type of read… sci-fi books have never interested me. Butttt I kept seeing it on “good reads” lists and…. (I hate to admit this) Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars Instagrammed a picture of it… so I took the plunge, downloaded The Martian by Andy Weir, and gave it a try!

A man named Mark Watney gets left on Mars (don’t worry, I’m not giving anything away) and the entire book is basically a monologue of his thoughts, feelings, and sarcastic comments about the whole debacle. Within the first 5 minutes I was actually laughing out loud, embarrassingly enough.

FUTURE READS | Winter reading list

book quote

I’m a bit of a reading junkie at the moment… the colder weather is keeping me curled up in bed reading, instead of running around town exploring. The list of books I want to read is long, too long… but here are a few of my must-reads this winter:

Lets Explore Diabetes with OwlsI love finding new books to read, especially when they are recommended by friends or on a “must read” booklists. I stumbled upon PureWow’s latest article, “30 Days of WOW: Best New Book for…”, and knew there would be a book on there for me.

LATEST LISTEN | Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

wild_bycherylstrayedI had just finished my last audio book and had a long car drive coming up. I had 10 minutes to find a new audio book to download or I was doomed with a 45 minute car ride of horrible radio stations.

I began flipping through itunes as fast as possible to best sellers in non-fiction, praying a name would pop up that I had heard good things about… Wild by Cheryl Strayed…. hmmmmm. All I knew was that Oprah loved it and Reese Witherspoon was staring in the film… fingers crossed it’s an amazing book! BUY!

LATEST LISTEN | Now I See You: A Memoir by Nicole C. Kear

NowISeeYou_bookTruth be told, I was not too excited about this book being selected as the next read for our “Beltway Book Club”. I am not a big fan of memoirs, especially when it’s about a young girl being told she is going blind at age 19. But, like the good book club member that I am, I started reading Now I See You by Nicole C. Kear.

Well, technically, I started listening. Lately I have been on an audiobook kick. Not only is it a great way to stay entertained on my drive to and from work, but it’s also great to listen to in the mornings as I get ready, in the evening as I whip up dinner, or even during a workout when I climb on a treadmill at the gym with the non-working tv (#fail).
