When some people go on vacation they just want to relax and sit by the pool all day with a drink in one hand and food in the other. I’m a bit different…
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely eat and drink a lot on vacation (you can’t go to Paris and not live on baguettes, croissants, and wine), but I don’t like to lay around. I think one of the best ways to explore a new city is to run the city!
Sitting in a taxi or riding on a bus is not the proper way to take in all the sights. Half the fun of a new city is seeing how people in that area actually live. This means you hear locals talk, see hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and most importantly beautiful views. You can’t get to the top of a mountain in a car and you can’t hear the different languages being spoken on the street in a bus.
When you get to a new city, put your luggage down, put your workout shoes on, and start exploring on foot!*** I promise you, it will open your eyes to so much more. Plus, it’s a great way to burn a few extra calories (and if you eat like I do on vacation, that is much needed)!
What have been some of your favorite cities you have explored on a run?
*** Of course, I never suggest you run alone in a new city (that’s where my boyfriend comes in handy)! Always have a map with you, and make sure to have a phone just incase you need to make an SOS call.
Could not agree more – you see so much more and so many things you’d never see otherwise.
