HONEST REVIEW | The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondō

life changing magic of tidying upSo, I read the book that has been trending lately… The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondō

This is now where I will upset a few (a lot of) people…. thank goodness this was a short book, or else I would be much more angry about the time wasted reading it! Maybe I wasn’t the right audience, but it didn’t speak to me at all.

I love tidying, and maybe that’s one of the issues. I already know the best way for myself to tidy which makes me feel confident and happy in my clean home. Many of her suggestions and strategies seemed useless or unnecessary to me.

I had to giggle/ roll my eyes at some of the things she said in the book …. “thank your home for giving you shelter”…. “tell your purse thank you for all it did for you today”…. I get what she is trying to say, but really? I talk to myself enough, I don’t need to start talking to inanimate objects as well. I can’t get THAT cray cray.

Then she managed to turn tidying into a weight loss trick for a chapter. “If you tidy… you will lose weight”… um what? That seemed like a stretch to me. That would be like saying “if you crash your car, you will lose weight”… I mean I guess if you don’t have a car you would be walking more… but really, they are not related. I can see it now… new fad diet of 2015: tidying.

Not to mention, many strategies she describes are related to Japanese customs, Interesting, but not relatable whatsoever. Needless to say… not my favorite book (at all). I’m not sure what type of un-tidy person I would recommend this book to, if any.

There were only two points I found myself nodding in agreement to as I read the book:

1) Start with discarding
2) Don’t show your family what you are throwing away (I’ve made that mistake one too many times when I was living at home)

There you go! Remember those two points and I just saved you from having to read the book :) You can thank me later!

P.S. Sorry if I offended anyone! Here are pictures of adorable puppies to make you feel better :)

Now, continue tidying however makes you happiest.

happy cleaning
