I can’t believe I’m about to say this…. but my half marathon in DC is in 14 days! 14 DAYS! I feel like it was just yesterday I was saying it was 4 months away (eek!).
So while I was home in Florida this weekend visiting the ‘rents, I put on my charming smile and asked for new running shoes. They can’t resist the “Amanda smile”, so off to Fit2Run we went!
This was the first time I’ve been officially “fit” for running shoes and I did it all in a strapless Lilly Pulitzer dress :) Poor planning on my part.
I think some people got a good chuckle, at least I did, as I did laps around the store’s “track” trying out different shoes. These beauties were selected!
I got some new socks to try, too :) Little did I now how important socks are… so I got two different brands to compare!
Along with Clif shot energy gels to take on some of my final long runs before the big day!
Now if only I could remember to put my socks on the right feet….
What “gear” items do you make sure to have for a race or longer run? Any special energy boosters you would recommend I try? I’m still not completely convinced the Clif shots are the best out there.
That’s so exciting you’re doing the half! I’m not one for running, but my father has been doing half and full marathons over the last five years or so, so I’ve seen it all! I know he really likes the Honey Stinger brand of energy… Stuff. But I can’t remember if they do shots, or if they only do the little chew things.
Good luck with the rest of your training, and with your race :)

Thank you for the recommendation! I want to try as many as possible to find the best one! I’m looking up your father’s kind now :)

I’ve run two half marathons and never really became a fan of the gels and whatnot. Both races I ran had “power shots” of Gatorade or something at their water stations and I did fine with just those occasionally. I ran one with compression socks which was nice for my calves afterwards. Good luck!!

I’ve been thinking of giving the compression socks a try! I’ve heard great things about them. I used Gatorade last time on my race and it worked out pretty well. I honestly may stick with the gatorade, the gooey shots kind of gross me out haha

Live in Features socks for my long runs! My arches always get super tired, so the extra support they give is much appreciated in my feet :) Love the spiffy new kicks – and love the fact you were wearing Lilly on a treadmill. Killing it!

I had never even heard of Features socks before, but I think they are the better of the two I picked :) Little did I know how unsupported my arches were before them haha

I’ve only done 5K’s, and I love running around the lake that’s near me. It’s about 3.8 miles. I’m due for new running shoes. Which Nikes are those? I love the color!

5ks are great! That’s how I started out. Plus, running around a lake sounds like heaven! The Nikes are Air Zoom Odyssey :) I love them! http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/air-zoom-odyssey-running-shoe/pid-10294328/pgid-10294305

Hi Amanda, I came to your blog to look at your training reports! I’m so glad I did because I bought 2 pairs of those Features socks in Philadelphia a few months back and promptly forgot what they were. It makes ordering new pairs hard when you don’t even know what you’ve got. Especially when you somehow lose 1 sock which is a pretty costly mistake at $15 a pair! I love them.
Good luck in DC!!!!

Oh no! You lost one of them?? That’s the worst! I haven’t posted training reports yet because I’m truly not that fast. I know I shouldn’t compare my speed to others, but I do :( Maybe next half-marathon I’ll post training times. It may help me hold myself accountable to run more haha
